I developed this project to explore creating a book cover, title page, and interior page layouts using Adobe InDesign.
Each person takes photographs of a given subject, edits their shoot, chooses images to use in their design, and creates it using a provided template.
I direct the group to select images for the final book and help each individual develop their cover concept.
There are a few scenarios for the cover design. I do it myself in some cases, as with Finding the Alphabet; I choose a student’s solution and hone it, as with Finding Joy!; or I combine multiple student ideas into one, as with Numb3rs Game.
Blurb.com prints the book, which is available for purchase.
I am always impressed by the work submitted by my students, who are not design majors and take the course as an elective. They are thrilled to see and hold the final printed book that they created. I send a copy of each edition for the director to have and use to promote the program.
